In sharp contrast with Aperture's and Lightroom's comparison modes, LightZone can only open one image at a time. Also, the program's browser and editor need to be better integrated. It also handles JPEG, PNG, and TIFF files, but the lack of PSD support is disappointing. LightZone's DNG support helps make up for its limited support of other RAW formats. Additionally, in LightZone you can't use painting tools to create selections, or even to clone parts of an image, as you can with Photoshop's clone-stamp tool. Pretty clumsy, and it makes the zone-selections tools somewhat less than robust. With LightZone, you'd have to create a C-shaped selection for the left side of the doughnut, then a reversed C-shaped selection for the right side, and make sure the ends overlap. The result is that you end up selecting the doughnut but not the hole. Holding down Alt makes a selection subtract from another currently active selection. In Photoshop you could make a circular selection around the perimeter of the doughnut, and then hold down the Alt key while selecting the area of the hole. You want to select the entire doughnut, and none of the table. What does this mean, you ask? Let's say you have a photo of a doughnut on a table, and the table is visible around the doughnut and in the hole. Some sort of color-coding would be nice.Īnother problem: There's no way to have one region subtract from another. I got confused a few times trying to remember which regions corresponded to which adjustments. Unfortunately, the region tools need refinement. LZN format, adjustments and defined regions remain "live" and eternally editable. Best of all, the whole process is nondestructive when saved in LightZone's native. I found this to be a very effective and powerful tool for image editing. LightZone bests Aperture and Lightroom by offering masking "region" tools, so that adjustments can be applied only to certain areas of the image. LightZone includes ten other tools, which adjust sharpening, saturation, white balance, and more. The end result is rather like that obtained with Photoshop's Curves command, but LightZone's tools are much easier and more intuitive for photographers to use. You can then stretch and compress zones in the ZoneMapper to correct the image's exposure. The ZoneMapper is a vertical strip made up of the same 16 zones hover your cursor over a ZoneMapper zone, and the corresponding areas are highlighted in the ZoneFinder. The ZoneFinder shows a posterized version of the image, broken down according to brightness levels into 16 grayscale zones, from white to black. LightZone, inspired by the "zone" system of photography developed by Ansel Adams, focuses on remapping tonal values to optimize an image's highlights and shadows.
Instead, they deliver a handful of the editing tools that photographers are most likely to need. These programs don't try to match the all-encompassing multitasking of Adobe Photoshop. Like Apple Aperture and Adobe Lightroom, LightZone belongs to a new breed of application designed specifically for serious photographers and the RAW-formatted images they typically use.
